group 1

Approximately 30 young people from across the Country took part in one of the noisiest BAT AGM demonstrations yet, to raise awareness of the issue of Child Labour in tobacco farming.

Young people were able to directly ask shareholders their opinions and to put their point of view across, as well as rallying support from passing motorists and pedestrians.

“We went to the BAT AGM which was full of it’s shareholders to protest against child labour and all the other negative aspects of BAT. We did that because we have strong opinions on the matter.”

“I really had my point of view heard. The Big Shout is about having your say, being heard and I really did that today.”

“I think that this year’s AGM was the best turnout. We got our point across very well”

/ NETWORK EVENT 2010

In March 2010 young people got together to learn about and discuss negative practices of the tobacco industry.

Following on from our Campaign weekend in October 2009, this was an opportunity for young people to get together tell us what they’d achieved since we last met and also to design the next stage of the Smoke & Mirrors Campaign.

After listening to speakers from ASH, 38 Degrees and the young people from STAMP, the participants were able to discuss the issues they felt passionate about with professionals from the anti-tobacco movement.

A fun-packed afternoon provided opportunities for participants to attend workshops in digital flyer design, chanting, how to handle the media and Banner making.

Some of the reflections on the day…

“Media training and Banner making meant I learned new skills”

“It really helped me to see what is going on in the world”

“All the workshops were really useful”

“I want to learn more about this”

“really accessable training”

Fast Facts

Smoke & Mirrors aims to encourage YOU – 14-18 year olds from across the North West – to speak out about negative tobacco industry practices. Highlighting how cigarettes are marketed despite advertising restrictions, the tobacco industry’s role in global issues such as deforestation and child labour, as well as challenging the portrayal of smoking in film and TV, by presenting the hard facts behind the tobacco industry.

So here’s some facts we discovered ourselves that you can use to get the ball rolling…

  • Fact 1
Most people start smoking between 14 and 18 years old. Why? Like any business the tobacco industry needs to get new customers – it makes sense to target YOU – to replace those who have quit or died from the habit – they work with the best agencies to create attractive packets & displays. Bright colours and words can lead to false beliefs about the risks of cigarette brands.
  • Fact 2
Smoking in movies and tv misleads young people into thinking that smoking is more common than it actually is. It also makes people feel smoking is more normal and acceptable. Guess what? It isn’t…
  • Fact 3
A new report has revealed a horrifying picture of child labour on tobacco plantations in Malawi in Africa. The report by Plan International estimates that some 78,000 children work on tobacco farms in Malawi. For 12 hours of unrelenting work they receive 11p. Fact 4 Tobacco industry practices lead to large scale deforestation. Wood is used to dry or cure the tobacco in many developing countries while in many richer countries oil, coal or natural gas are used to dry tobacco, all these are fossil fuels and so will contribute to climate change.
  • Fact 4
The tobacco industry is dominated by a handful of large companies who operate across the world making enormous profits. In 2007, the combined revenues of the three leading tobacco companies was £90 billion And Under 16 year olds now spend 135 million pounds on cigarettes every year. Whoah that’s a lot of cash.
